Kabush's 32 over-under Unicorn

First They Came For Our 26ers…

The bike industry runs on experiments.

Some succeed. Some fail. Most leave behind an idea worth stealing.

After spending a few days riding a 32-inch mountain bike, Geoff Kabush came away with a simple observation:

"The biggest takeaway was I thought these wheels would be sick on a gravel bike."

And that's how this project with the Naked Unicorn Skunkworks started.

That single thought kicked off months of conversations, sketches, geometry discussions, wheel sourcing, tire measuring, and the usual amount of head scratching that comes with trying something nobody has really done before.

Or, in Kabush's words:

"Lot of buzz about 32 MTB but I was surprised I hadn’t heard more about 32 gravel so I set to work."

The starting point wasn't how to make a 32-inch bike.

The starting point was how to make a better Kabush bike.

A bike designed to answer a question. To cover ground faster. To ride rougher trails on drop bars. To blur the line between gravel bike and mountain bike just a little further.

The result is the 32xUWC.

Built for Kabush.

Built for underbiking.

Built because nobody could come up with a good reason not to.

Sometimes that's still the best reason to build a bike.

Jamie's Lake Country Crusher

We love this build — a classic example of our Naked Gravel spec.

Jamie’s brief for this bike was simple:

“Daily commuting, exploring FSRs, cycle touring… a little bit of everything!”

He’s been riding for decades — from XC racing to touring Europe twice and riding through Cuba — and wanted a bike that could comfortably handle everyday riding as well as bigger adventures.

There was also a more personal reason behind this build:

“Grandparents recently passed and wanted to get something special (a custom bike) made to remind me of them.”

The result is a bike built to do exactly what Jamie asked for: a little bit of everything. Comfortable, capable, fun, and ready for many years of riding ahead.

Michael's Pink Panther

There is something about haute pink and black. It just works. We don’t usually encourage painting a naked titanium velocipede, but when the result is this fun, how could we do otherwise?

This is Michael’s third naked and we are delighted to send it off into the Vermont wilds with him!

Ryan's Mt SCENDer

“The bike I selected, and paid for, is a custom-built titanium hardtail, crafted in BC by my friend Sam……. My entire mountain bike fleet now consists of one simple hardtail, capable of tackling any terrain. This choice suits me, my riding style, and my life.”
-Ryan Leech

Who ever said “never meet your hero’s” obviously never met Ryan Leech.

I have followed Ryan’s career since his early days as professional trials rider. I have a very well worn and scratched DVD of “Mastering the Art of Trials”. In this I was first introduce to his “Manifesto Style”, a philosophy of flow that hast shaped his life, teaching growth as a human. This has always resonated with me. In those early days of MTB it was refreshing to see someone understand that mountain bike was far more than loud music and sick edits. It was a lifestyle. A way of connecting with your environment in the simplest way possible, without a bunch of extra “hops” and wasted movement.

This sums up our friendship as well. To be honest, we have actually spent very little time together, but each meeting is heartful, connected and real. Each time, I am reminded of what Mountain Biking can be when you are curious and open your heart to the possibilities that human being, trail and machine can create together.

It was honour to work on Ryan’s ONE mountain bike with him. In his own words, please click through to:

Martin's ATB

Off to Switzerland. A versatile platform for Martin to build out in few different ways over the coming years. Primary use: multi surface adventures. Bike packing.

Josh's Fractal Graveleur

This was a fun bike to work on with Josh! The paint and anodizing was was a nice creative challenge and really turned out well.

In Josh’s words: I have been riding an Ibis Hakka for a couple years and really like the way the bike feels. My biggest qualms of the frame is the lack of rear tire clearance, and I would like a little more stand over height. I would like to keep most of the geo from that bike.

Josh has been riding for about 35 years, competed in Observed Trials in the late 80’s- early 90’s, then into the freeride scene of the 2000-2006 or so, damaged myself too much, and now enjoy longer rides with every aspect tied in.

Gabriel's Squamish N’ Quadra Quiver Quiller

Gabriel grew up on Quadra. A true outdoor child of the rock!

He asked if we could build him a bike with the follow spec:

I’m looking for my one bike to rule them all - gravel, bike packing, the very occasional road ride, bouncing around town, you name it! I live in Squamish, so our gravel is a bit rough but many routes are available. I’m also a fan of multi-day bike packing trips with my partner, either on the islands or the interior.

Im primarily a mountain biker but imagine I’ll be transitioning to more and more gravel as I get older and kids become part of the picture. I already have an XC main bike and an enduro rig so that’s all taken care of. I’m comfortable on any type of technical trail and can ride all the named trails in Squamish and whistler comfortably, and many of the unnamed ones! I regularly race in our local enduro series, and may start racing more gravel/multiday stuff in the future (BC bike race is definitely a goal, and maybe the buckshot!)

Chad's Penticton Path Finder

Clean. Simple. Timeless.

Chad wanted a forever companion for:
longer gravel rides. lots of climbing. big one day adventure rides. fast. possibly some future bike packing. Everyday. Multisurface adventure machine.

This one is for those days when you might go for 30 minutes or 30 hours.
You might take this road.
You might take that path.
You want a bike as fluid as your ride plans.

I have no idea where Chad will ride this.
Probably a little bit of everywhere.
And a lot of nowhere in particular.

May we all be so lucky.
